The teaser, scored to David Bowie's "Space Oddity," opens on Joe, an introverted rocket mechanic voiced by Chalamet, going through his routine at a spacecraft facility. His path crosses with Fran, an astro-botanist voiced by Gomez who is developing what the film's synopsis describes as the world's first plant-fueled rocket. Their fumbling, awkward chemistry culminates in Joe working up the nerve to ask Fran to lunch, only for her to counter with a dinner invitation instead. The tone shifts once their rocket launches and something unexpected returns to Earth in its place: three small, chatty aliens who unsuccessfully attempt to play dead when Joe discovers them. According to the official synopsis, the trio, named Dunk, Welly and Shirm, are fleeing an overzealous but incompetent interplanetary law officer and come to realize that the rocket Fran engineered may be their only way home.
The voice cast leans heavily on British comedic talent for the alien characters, with Rob Brydon, known for "Barbie" and "The Trip," Diane Morgan of "Cunk On" and "Mandy," and Jamie Demetriou from "Cruella" and "Jay Kelly" bringing Dunk, Welly and Shirm to life. Two-time Emmy winner Brett Goldstein, fresh off his run on "Ted Lasso," voices the pursuing officer Zandro, while the supporting ensemble includes Oscar winner Allison Janney, who also appears in Illumination's "Minions & Monsters," and Emmy winner Lamorne Morris of "Fargo" and "Spider-Noir."

For Chalamet, a four-time Academy Award nominee best known for his live-action work in the "Dune" saga, "Not Alone" represents a notable pivot into family animation, broadening his range beyond the prestige dramas and awards-season contenders that have defined his career. Gomez, an Emmy and Grammy nominee whose recent credits include "Only Murders in the Building," continues to build a voice-acting résumé that now spans multiple studios and genres, reinforcing her standing as one of the industry's most versatile crossover stars.
Behind the camera, "Not Alone" is co-directed by a trio of Illumination veterans: Eric Guillon, the character designer behind "Despicable Me" and "Minions" who also co-directed "Despicable Me 3"; Claire Dodgson, an editor whose credits include "The Lorax" and "Minions"; and Jonathan Del Val, co-director of "Minions: The Rise of Gru" and "The Secret Life of Pets 2." Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri produces, with Joy Poirel, Richard Curtis and David Distenfeld serving as executive producers.
The film is set for a theatrical release through Universal Pictures on April 16, 2027, positioning it within a crowded upcoming slate that also includes Illumination's "Minions & Monsters." Given the studio's dominant track record at the global box office with character-driven original IP, "Not Alone" is being closely watched as a potential new tentpole property, with early buzz driven largely by the star power of its unconventional animated leads.
