The song appears on "Confessions II", Madonna's fifteenth studio album, released July 3. It's her first time officially recording with any of her children, and the story behind it came out publicly on July 2, during a livestreamed listening event hosted by iHeartRadio and TikTok. Comedian Bob the Drag Queen hosted the conversation, and one of his first questions cut right to it: whose idea was this song? Leon didn't hesitate. It was hers. She's talked about how much goes unsaid between a mother and daughter — not just tension, but love too, the kind that's hard to put into words because of how much emotion sits underneath it.
That tracks with what Madonna has said elsewhere about how the song came together. In an earlier interview with Interview magazine, she described Leon coming to her directly and suggesting they write something together as a way to repair their relationship. Madonna has called it a turning point — the moment that convinced her it was time to actually make this record. She's also talked about how reluctant Leon had been to work with her professionally before this, worried about being seen as riding her mother's coattails instead of building something of her own. That hesitation makes sense given who Leon's mother is, and it makes the decision to finally collaborate feel like it means something.
The song itself doesn't shy away from the hard stuff. Madonna sings from the point of view of a parent looking back, admitting she didn't fully understand at the time how her fame might have unsettled or hurt her daughter growing up. There's a callback to "Little Star," a song from her 1998 album Ray of Light that was written about Leon when she was a baby — a nice full-circle touch, given that the girl in that song is now trading verses with her mother almost thirty years later.

Leon isn't new to music herself. She released her debut single "Lock & Key" back in 2022, along with an EP called GO, performing under the name Lolahol. She studied dance at the University of Michigan, graduating in 2018, and has spent years building an identity as a model, dancer, and singer that's separate from her mother's shadow — which is partly why this collaboration carries extra weight. It's not a young artist getting a boost from a famous parent. It's two people meeting in the middle after a long road to get there.
One more detail from the interview stuck out: before going into the studio to record, Leon had a dream about her maternal grandmother. She couldn't remember exactly what was said, but she felt her presence, and it left her thinking about what their relationship might have looked like if she'd lived. She described the experience as a strange but beautiful way to honor her memory while working through things with her own mother.
