But one of the most influential psychologists of the twentieth century thought there was something far more interesting going on. Carl Gustav Jung called it synchronicity, and nearly a hundred years later, scientists, philosophers, and physicists are still arguing about whether he was onto something real or just describing a very human habit of seeing patterns where none exist.

Synchronicity is different. It's when two events line up in a way that feels significant, but there's no causal thread connecting them. The connection isn't in the chain of events — it's in the meaning the person experiences. Jung's now-famous example, drawn from his own clinical practice, involved a patient who was recounting a dream about a golden scarab beetle. As she spoke, Jung heard a tapping at the window. Why Jung Took This So Seriously
Jung didn't arrive at this idea casually. Why Science Still Struggles With This Idea
Here's where things get genuinely difficult, and it's worth being honest about both sides.
The skeptical case is strong. Human brains are pattern-detection machines. We evolved to notice connections quickly, because in the ancestral environment, missing a real pattern (a rustle in the grass means a predator) was far more costly than imagining a fake one. This bias has a name in psychology: apophenia, the tendency to perceive meaningful connections in unrelated or random data. By this account, synchronicity isn't a mysterious force. It's a spotlight effect — our minds selectively illuminating the coincidences that feel meaningful and quietly ignoring the vast sea of non-events around them.
But the case isn't fully closed, either. Synchronicity resists ordinary scientific testing precisely because it isn't a repeatable, controllable phenomenon. Science depends on being able to isolate variables and run the same experiment over and over to see if the same result holds. Meaningful coincidence, by definition, is personal, unpredictable, and tied to subjective emotional significance — you can't schedule one, and you can't force one to happen in a lab. That doesn't prove synchronicity is real, but it does mean the usual scientific toolkit isn't well-suited to rule it out either. Given that gap in our knowledge, a few scientists argue it's premature to declare with total confidence that mind and matter can *never* be connected in ways we don't yet understand. Why Synchronicity Feels So Powerful, Psychologically
Regardless of where you land on the metaphysical question, there's broad agreement on why these experiences hit people so hard emotionally.
Meaningful coincidences tend to show up at moments of transition — grief, major decisions, falling in love, the aftermath of trauma. Psychologically, this makes sense: these are exactly the moments when we're searching hardest for guidance, reassurance, or a sign that we're on the right path. A coincidence that lines up with that search can feel like the universe is responding to us directly, which is an enormously comforting and motivating experience, whether or not there's a hidden causal thread behind it.
Jung himself believed synchronicities often occur when the unconscious mind is trying to get the conscious mind's attention — nudging a person toward psychological growth, a concept he called individuation. In that sense, whether or not synchronicity is "real" in a physical sense, treating it as psychologically real and worth paying attention to can still be genuinely useful. Noticing a coincidence and reflecting on what it might mean for your life is a form of self-inquiry, even if the coincidence itself was, mechanically speaking, chance.
So, Coincidence or Something More?
The honest answer is that nobody has settled this question, and it's possible nobody ever fully will — not because the idea is unscientific nonsense, but because it sits right at the edge of what current scientific methods are built to measure. What Jung offered wasn't a proof. It was a lens: a way of taking the emotionally striking coincidences in our lives seriously as psychological events worth examining, rather than dismissing them outright or treating them as literal magic.
Whether you walk away thinking synchronicity points to some deeper order in the universe, or you land firmly on the side of statistics and pattern-seeking brains, the underlying human experience Jung was describing is real and universal. We all notice these moments. We all feel that small jolt when the inner and outer world seem to rhyme.
