Who Was David Hume?

Isaac Newton had shown that the universe operated according to precise, discoverable laws, and many thinkers believed reason alone could eventually explain everything about nature and human life.

The connection we assume is out there in the world turns out to be something we cannot directly observe at all.

The Everyday Assumption We Never Question


Think about a simple example: a billiard ball rolls across a table and strikes a second ball, which then moves. We say the first ball caused the second one to move. This seems like the clearest possible case of cause and effect. But Hume asks us to look more closely at what our senses actually register.

What do we really observe? We see the first ball approach the second. We see contact. We see the second ball begin to move immediately afterward. That is the complete report from our senses — nothing more. We do not see a hidden force, a power, or a necessary link that makes the second ball's motion inevitable. We see one event, then another event, in close succession. The "causing" part — the actual power that supposedly makes the second event happen — is nowhere to be found in what we perceive.


This is the heart of Hume's challenge. We assume there's a necessary connection binding cause to effect, as though the effect simply had to follow. But according to Hume, no impression of our senses ever delivers that necessity to us. We see sequence. We infer connection.

Constant Conjunction, Not Necessary Connection


Hume didn't deny that cause and effect appear real and reliable. He wasn't arguing that billiard balls move by magic or that fire doesn't really burn. His point was more precise: our belief in causation comes from repetition, not from logical proof or direct perception.

He called this pattern "constant conjunction." Every time we've seen fire, it has been accompanied by heat. Every time we've dropped an object, it has fallen. Because event A has always been followed by event B in our experience, we come to expect that the next time A happens, B will happen too. Over time, this expectation feels so natural that we mistake it for a perception of necessity — as if we could somehow see that A must produce B.

But repetition, however consistent, is not the same as logical necessity. Watching the sun rise every morning of your life does not logically guarantee it will rise tomorrow. It makes you confident, understandably so — but confidence built on habit is different from certainty built on proof.

The Problem of Induction


This leads to what philosophers now call "the problem of induction," one of Hume's most famous and enduring contributions. Induction is the process of drawing general conclusions from specific observed cases — assuming that because something has happened repeatedly in the past, it will continue to happen in the future. Nearly all scientific reasoning depends on induction. Experiments are repeated, patterns are observed, and laws of nature are formulated on the assumption that those patterns will hold going forward.

Hume's challenge is this: what actually justifies the leap from "this has always happened before" to "this will happen again"? You cannot use past experience to prove that the future will resemble the past, because that very argument assumes the thing it's trying to prove. It's circular. You would be using induction to justify induction.

Nor can pure logic settle the matter. There is no contradiction in imagining that the laws of nature might shift tomorrow — that bread might no longer nourish us, or that dropped objects might rise instead of fall. It would be strange and surprising, but not logically impossible. And if it isn't a logical certainty, then our trust in cause and effect isn't coming from logic at all. It's coming from something else.

Habit and Custom: The Real Foundation of Belief


So if not perception and not logic, what is the actual source of our belief in cause and effect? Hume's answer is refreshingly honest: habit. Or, as he sometimes called it, custom.

After witnessing the same sequence of events over and over, the human mind forms an automatic expectation. This isn't a flaw or a failure of reasoning — Hume saw it as a basic feature of how minds work, shared by humans and animals alike. A dog that has been fed at the sound of a bell will come running the next time the bell rings, not because it has logically deduced a causal law, but because habit has wired the association into its behavior.

Humans are the same, just with more sophisticated language to describe the process. We don't derive our expectation that fire burns from a rigorous proof. We derive it from a lifetime of consistent experience that has trained our minds to anticipate one event whenever we witness another. Hume's insight is that this psychological habit, not rational insight, is doing the heavy lifting in nearly all of our beliefs about the world.

Why This Matters: Undermining the Foundations of Certainty


At first glance, this might seem like a philosophical curiosity — interesting, but not especially threatening. Look closer, though, and the implications are enormous.

If cause and effect is not something we perceive or prove, but only something we habitually expect, then the entire edifice of scientific law starts to look less like solid bedrock and more like an extremely well-supported guess. Every law of physics, every medical treatment, every engineering calculation rests on the assumption that observed patterns will continue. Hume is not saying these patterns are false. He is saying we have no airtight rational guarantee that they must continue — only a strong psychological expectation that they will.

This is why Hume is often described as a skeptic, though it's worth being precise about what kind of skeptic he was. He was not claiming that we should stop believing in cause and effect, or that science is worthless. He was pointing out that our confidence in these things is not built on the kind of ironclad rational foundation many philosophers before him had assumed. It rests on custom, instinct, and the practical necessities of navigating a world we cannot fully explain.

Hume's "Mitigated" Skepticism


It's a common misunderstanding to think Hume wanted people to become paralyzed by doubt, unable to trust anything. In fact, he was quite clear that this kind of extreme skepticism is neither possible nor useful. Even the most committed skeptic still eats when hungry, avoids fire, and expects the ground to hold their weight when they walk. Nature itself, Hume argued, does not allow us to live as thoroughgoing doubters. Habit is simply too strong, and arguably too necessary for survival.

What Hume proposed instead is sometimes called "mitigated skepticism" — a more modest and self-aware approach. We should continue relying on cause and effect, induction, and everyday reasoning, because we have no real alternative and because these tools work remarkably well in practice. But we should hold our conclusions with appropriate humility. We should recognize that our certainty is a feature of human psychology, not a window into some deeper metaphysical necessity built into the universe.

In other words, Hume wasn't trying to destroy science or common sense. He was trying to correctly locate their foundations — showing that they rest on custom and experience rather than pure reason, and that this is simply the honest condition of human knowledge.

Kant's Response and the Ripple Effect


Hume's argument had a seismic effect on the history of philosophy. The German philosopher Immanuel Kant famously said that reading Hume woke him from what he called his "dogmatic slumber." Kant had, like many philosophers before him, assumed that causation was simply a rationally self-evident feature of reality. Hume's argument forced him to reconsider.

Kant's response was to argue that causation is not something we discover in the external world at all, but rather a structure the human mind itself imposes on experience in order to make sense of it. In Kant's view, we don't perceive causal necessity because we passively receive it from the world — we perceive it because our minds are built to organize sensory information causally, whether or not the world truly works that way independent of our perception. This was a radical repositioning of the problem, and it launched an entirely new direction in philosophy, one still debated today.


Beyond Kant, Hume's skepticism about induction has continued to occupy philosophers of science well into the modern era. Thinkers such as Karl Popper tried to sidestep the problem by arguing that science doesn't really rely on proving theories true through repeated confirmation, but instead makes progress by rigorously trying to prove theories false. Others have proposed probabilistic solutions, arguing that while induction can't offer certainty, it can offer a rational basis for degrees of confidence. None of these responses has fully "solved" Hume's problem in a way all philosophers accept — which is itself a testament to how deep the challenge runs.

Why It Still Matters Today


It would be easy to file this away as an abstract debate for academic philosophers, but Hume's skepticism has real relevance to how we think in the modern world.

Scientific reasoning still depends on induction. Every time researchers run an experiment multiple times and conclude a pattern holds, they are relying on the same basic leap Hume identified — the assumption that consistent past results predict future ones. This doesn't make science unreliable; it has produced extraordinary, verifiable results. But Hume's insight is a useful reminder that scientific conclusions are always provisional, always open to revision if new evidence appears, rather than being absolute truths carved into the fabric of reality.

The same applies to everyday reasoning and even to modern technology. Predictive systems, forecasting models, and pattern-recognition tools all operate on essentially Humean logic: they extrapolate from past data to anticipate future outcomes. They can be remarkably accurate, but their accuracy depends entirely on the assumption that the future will keep resembling the past — an assumption that, as Hume showed, can never be proven with logical certainty.

There's also a more personal dimension. Hume's philosophy encourages a kind of intellectual humility. We move through life confidently predicting outcomes, trusting patterns, and making plans based on what has worked before. Hume doesn't ask us to stop doing this — he simply asks us to notice that we're doing it, and to recognize that our confidence, however justified by experience, is not the same thing as certainty.
